I actually went for my first run this evening. Im so glad the weather was nice and the scenery was beautiful, because the run...not fun.
I realize I need to get over this hatred, but not sure how. I just don't enjoy the pounding my body takes, at all. Today I was trying to be positive, but I reverted back my big question, How can people actually like doing this?
I need to run two miles every day until I leave for the tri. If I repeat the same route the next 12 days, I should be okay. Im so grateful the run on this first tri of the summer season is so short.
Tri-umph!

April, May...OMG JUNE!
Where has time gone? Signing up for the Redondo Beach Triathlon, didn't seem to be the extrinsic motivation I needed. However, the procrastination adrenaline rush has finally kicked in and Im beginning to get serious about the next 14 days--at least thinking about getting serious. haha
Today's Realities:
1. Fear of not finishing is no longer a reason to get off my butt. I know I can finish the race, even though not as I should.
2. I am neglecting my running because I hate it.
Today's Realities:
- I need to get to a place where I can tolerate the last leg of the race. I suppose this will be this summer's personal resolution. Maybe tomorrow, I'll have a go. :P
- I have not been swimming on a regular basis. I know that I can complete the swim, albeit not quickly, nor the way I should, had I been training. Im a tad concerned about the water temperature as the weather in CA has been so cool.
- I have been better about riding and pushing myself the last several weeks. Guess it's a good thing this leg is sandwiched between the two.
- I've been using MapmyRide to log my bike ride and just happened upon MapmyTri yesterday. I think I will switch over from ontri as I like the features of the mapping.

Extrinsic Motivation
I finally signed up for my next triathlon! I had been putting it off since life during swim season gives me so little down time for anything, especially training. And, since I really don't enjoy exercise, am not intrinsically motivated to workout, nor persuaded by the need to live a healthy life, I know I have to have a goal to work toward! Sadly, I also know that my motivation is only achieved through financial commitment and peer pressure.
Spring break brought an opportunity to be motivated. Registering for the tri, buying new pedals and shoes for my ride, and getting the daily texts from my training buddies provided me with 'motivation' I needed to get back in the pool and in the saddle this week. I managed to swim three days and ride two--wouldn't want to over do it my first week back! ha ha Im still ignoring the run piece. Perhaps Im going to need to invest in new running shoes;)
I chose to sign up for a short sprint and one I can manage with limited training time. It provides a necessary goal as well as distances that I can manage no matter what. The Redondo Beach Tri is the first weekend after school gets out--in just 9 weeks! This early summer date is a tad-bit worrisome because I know daily workouts are impossible until mid-May. Good thing Im motivated!

In the Red
Didn't meet all my goals this week.I did add swim to week 2, which meant I had to divide my time by three, rather than the two of the prior week. I came up short on running and biking. I knew it would be tough returning to work in addition to my responsibilities to the boys and their extra curricular activities to meet my workout goals. I guess I could justify the overall miles by robbing the extra 32 miles from week 1 and apply them to week 2--then I'd still be over;) ha ha
The only bike ride I managed was Tuesday when I packed my bike and rode after work. I suppose I should make that the plan for this week as well. I suppose I could have rode yesterday along w/ my run, but I'm still a little leery about adding the second workout until I can manage one a day consistently.
I adjusted my weekly goal. I suppose there in controversy in that, however knowing myself, I need to have small, obtainable goals or I quit trying. I kept my run and swim goals the same and reduced the number of bike miles from 30 to 20 for week 3. I'm hopeful I can meet all three this week:) The only obstacle is myself!
Week 3: January 10-16
Swim Goal: 1 mile
Bike Goal: 20 miles
Run Goal: 6 miles

It starts in my toes...
Long damn day. Left the house at 6:45a returned home at 8:30p!
We were two coaches down tonight, so I couldn't swim the first hour of practice. This usually would be a BIG problem for me, since I am always looking for a reason to skip practice! (Some things never change!) The good news, I didn't flake! The second hour has far fewer learn to swim kids, so our coaching ratio worked for me to jump in at 7. The water was warmer tonight, I could tell since my toes tingled when I hit the water. The swim felt great...love warm water :)

I want to ride my bicylce, bicycle, bicycle
Today was my scheduled day off, however, yesterday I had a thought (surprising I know;) that I may be able to get in a few miles before I had to pick up Trent. So, I threw my bike in the car today and took a short ride. With only an hour to give because of obligations with my boys, I ended up riding 48 minutes or so...all flat 13.2 mile loop around N. La Quinta: Washington St and out to Ave 52 then rode E on 50, the W on 48 to squeeze in a few extra before returning to Jefferson to Fred Waring and back to Miles Ave. This was not a course I'd follow again, but worked for an unplanned workout.

Peer Pressure to the Rescue!
Had to have a little chat with myself on the way to practice about sticking with the plan and not chickening out because it was so cold outside! Since these self-talks rarely work, I had back up peer pressure waiting for me--my only source of discipline. I arrived to see Jen (secretly hoping, Im sure;) waiting to see if Judy and I were going to wimp out. No luck. We all showed! More proof peer pressure works! lol
The water was not toasty and certainly not the 80* I was hoping-no steam off the water was my first clue, however I quickly warmed up in the first 100 yds.
Swam my warm up with the varsity girls. I always have fun when I swim with the team, lotsa chatting and laughing--my kind of workout!

After warm-up I was ready to get out! 1000yds, I felt was enough especially since I haven't done a lick of swimming since the last Tri on 10.10.10. Plus, I knew what was in store for them (like 5000 more yards;).
I started my migration down to the end of the pool where the ladder was and where, more importantly, the door to the team room was located so I could make a mad dash inside to my strategically placed towel. As I slid under the lane lines, I happened upon a lane of learn to swim youth group hanging on the wall. I popped in for a listen as the coach gave the set and quickly decided I could do it! Granted, it required zero effort on my part--not proud, just sayn!
5x50 @ 1:15
OK, D-for done. After that little mini-set, I kept cruising toward the shallow end and made my way over to my tri-buddies in the adult lane. They were working on their warm down, perfect--more time to chat! Dreading the getting out part of this gig and knowing I still had to be on deck coaching the next hour, I told myself I could log 400yds more to make 1650. But, without a buddy, I was quickly distracted and talked myself right out of it after 2X100@ 1:45-guess that was my warm down.
It was a good first day back. Didn't plan to swim much yardage, actually did more than expected, thought I should ease back into this swim piece. My goal for the week was 1650 or one mile...figured good enough for the first week back. I altered my goal after completing the warm-up, but then didn't reach it and only out of pure laziness. Shame. Ended with 1450yds. Shoulda, woulda, coulda completed 200yd to make the mile, but being the minimalist that I am, didn't. Maybe Thursday.
